Run Log: May 2013

I've now got two half marathons under my belt & have paid my money for a whole.  My 20 week training schedule started this week...here I go.  My legs have not quite recovered from the half.  Right hamstring is a little tweeky ~ and both IT bands are sore...and my left knee starts to hurt around 5 miles...but that's IT band stuff & I know what to do about it.  Trying to maintain my miles & get my legs into top shape again...there's a balance & here's hoping I find it.
An update on my marathon time.  I emailed them to ask where they got the 13 seconds they added to my time & explained my whole long saga.  A few days later I hear back that they will look into it & a day or so later, I checked my results & they updated my time to the time on my watch.  However, they did not update the standings.  That time actually has me placed 17 in my age group & that's what I'm going with.

6 biking miles for the month ~ up to the Memorial Day parade & back...those were 6 long miles
118 biking miles for the year
215.03 miles in my black, pink & blue Asics ~  They are serving me well...

My WEIGHT

Longest run this month: 13.23 (which is what my watch said the Cleveland Half was)

Favorite place to run this month: Downtown Cleveland :)  Running over the bridge toward Progressive Field...that was a sight.
# of bags of Candy Cane Kisses left in my cabinet: I still haven't looked so I still think it's three. ditto.  I'll bet they are quite stale.
# of books I read this month: ONE.  This has been a busy month.
Monthly mileage record: 107.5 ~ April 2013.  Two record months in a row!
Highest mileage ever-at-one-time:  13.5  Sunday, April 6, 2013

Senior awards

Patrick earned his fourth year academic award, the principal's excellence award (for a 4.0 or higher GPA), a technology award, and a $1000 scholarship from the Madison Education Association.
Pretty proud of all he's accomplished.
He was also listed under perfect attendance, which is very ironic considering his absence today was considered unexcused.
Next stop~ graduation.

Tennis Banquet

This has really been a great tennis season.  Both our boys played and were successful, in their own way.  We got to see them play singles side-by-side & play doubles together.  Really proud of the success each has felt in the sport!  Tonight was the tennis banquet & I have to say that Coach Vidmar does a very nice job of talking about each player when he gives out awards. He remembers things they have done.  He laughs and jokes and is serious all at the same time.  The man has a sincere heart.  Patrick earned his third-year varisty plaque & was named PAC honorable mention in singles.  Jacob did something not many do in tennis, he earned his varsity letter as a freshman.
It made my heart proud to hear the things Coach had to say about my kids.  He has been very good to both of them, as he is to all his players.  We are blessed.

marathon training

Today was my first training run for my 20 week marathon preparation.  I'm not sure how I really feel about that.  It's exciting.  It's overwhelming.  Deep down, it's REALLY scary.

After my EPIC FAIL run on Saturday...when my KNEE HURT {my knee doesn't hurt when I run} and I had to WALK {there's no walking in running} and I put out the bat signal...{which was received, but I had neglected to tell Mike where I would actually be running, so he ignored the bat signal}, I have been afraid to run.  I've stretched out my tight hamstrings.  I've rolled my IT bands.  I've rested.  I've worried.  And I ran again today.  And I could.  And my knee didn't hurt.  And my tight hamstrings are better.  And I CAN do this marathon thing...I hope.
Today was day one.  I've got 5 miles of marathon training on my legs...
Deep Down, it's really REALLY scary.

a better half

Today was the day I've been training for since January 7 ~ the Cleveland Half Marathon.
Most of the training was done in the cold ~ not too many days were in skirts & t-shirts.  So, it was good {and bad} that the temperature 4:00 am {when I woke up} was 62°.  No questioning what to wear ~ my Athleta swagger skort & a pink short sleeve top & added the pigs & an Underarmor headband & I was ready to rock.
Ate my bagel & peanut butter on the ride in, knowing exactly where I was going to park...only to find that S. Marginal Road is closed between W55th and the Muni Lot...so I drive back to 90 & get off at St. Claire, thinking I can get back to the muni lot...which I can't.  So I park on Lakeside...a block from E9th.  Yea, that was easy & close.  Often it is better to be lucky than smart.  I think God was looking out for us, because Mike needed us to be close.
The skies were overcast, but it was warm at the 7:00am start.  And it felt GOOD to run.  Only running 7.5 miles this week really had my legs fresh & the need to run strong.  Took the shoreway out & was just flying {for me}  My goal was to run 8:20/mile to start & then hopefully have enough to run negatives as I got further into the race.  Well, once again, my start was fast, the crowd was fast & I couldn't help myself.  The difference this race, I knew my legs were strong enough to finish the job.
At the first water stop the kid (probably in his 20's) takes his cup of water & I watch him reach inside the neck of his shirt.  He pulls out a straw taped to a piece of string.  He drinks his water, tucks the straw back in & hasn't broken stride at all.  I mention how awesome that is & he said a coach told him to do it.  I will have to remember this for my next race.
Saw Anita at mile 6.  She's my rock star cheerlearder.  Saw the Byers clan around mile 12. & Patrick took the best pictures.
I crossed that finish line & my watch said 1:47:34 ~ @ 13.23 miles.  I started it on the start line & stopped it just past the finish line.  And the Cleveland Marathon is only reporting my clock time.  There must have been a problem with my start crossing, because it sent out the texts at the 10K and the end.  BOO.

Mike (who's Akron half time is 1:47:30) and I will never know for sure who ran the fastest half.  And that may be the very best thing that could happen.  I'm just very proud of myself.  I finished strong & beat my previous time.

The play list of the day:

1.Thunder Road ~ Bruce Springsteen
2.Because I'm Awesome ~ The Dolly rots
3.Crazy Train ~ Ozzy Osbourne
4. Fat Bottomed Girls ~ Queen
5. Titanium ~ David Guetta
6. Spread Your Wings ~ Queen
7. Freak Like Me ~ Halestorm

8. American Boys ~ Halestorm
9. Stompa ~ Serena Ryder
10. We Take Care Of Our Own ~ Bruce Springsteen
11. Don't Stop Me Now ~ Queen
12. The Crazy Ones ~ Stellar Revival
13. Here's To Us ~ Halestorm
14. Ramrod ~ Bruce Springsteen

24. Red_Headed_Woman_Live_In_Cleveland_Ohio__November_10_2009 ~ Bruce Springsteen
25. No Surrender ~ Bruce Springsteen
26. We Are Alive ~ Bruce Springsteen

And Mike says he broke at mile 8.  26.2 is a long way to travel...when you don't want to after mile 8.  His first half was 1:55 ~ very good ~ The sun came out and the temperature soared {really} into the 80's.  His dad and sister were at mile 17 by the Cleveland Clinic, so I knew he'd passed them.  Then we got the 30K text alert which put him finishing at 4:05. Slower than the first half, but with the heat, pretty good.  Then he said he just died.  With 3 miles to go, Jackie "flew" past him & he thought, "oh, no"  So he caught up to her and she talked him to the finish line.  At one point he told her to go because he felt he was holding her back, but she was his guardian angel and ran with him to the end.  It did my heart good to see them come down to the finish...And he's never ever ever going to run a marathon again.  {so he says}

So...here's Today's update (5/20) from the Cleveland Marathon.  They gave me :13 on the start.  And I moved up in the standings.  For the Record there were 580 Females in my age group.  Placing 20th isn't too shabby.  There were 7, 407 half marathoners total.  I placed 954.  {I'm beast.}Share on facebook
