Blast Off

Nothing like 20 hours in a car over the weekend ~ and you would THINK that driving 10 hours SOUTH to ALABAMA would at least get you some WARMTH...

But there were rockets.  Lots and lots of rockets.  UC launch starts around 37:45 in the video:

Video

I have no idea if that link will work...it's to NASA Student Launch Facebook video post.

But I have pictures:
Bragg Farm ~ the tents are the teams & their rocket construction site.

this really happened

Set the stage:  There is a lady who works out at the Y every morning.  She used to swim everyday, and she would glare at Mike all the time.  Then she switched to lifting every morning and has been making small talk with us, mostly Mike ~ almost like she was flirting with him.
Today Dodd didn't show up to lift.

After lifting, Mike and I both swam {since it's spring break & I had the time}.  I get in the locker room after the swim, and Lady is coming in from lifting.

Lady: Done already?
Me: Yep, just 20 minutes of swimming today.
L: Where's that skinny guy?
Me: (wanting to laugh) Didn't show up today.  What a loser.
L:  I like him better than that other guy.
Me: Well, that other guy is my husband.
L: Well.  Huh.  Oh. Well.  Oh.  Well. {just looking at me so strangely}
Me: yep.  Have a good day.
L: Yea, you stand tall.

???
I laughed all the way home.

My Legs are TIRED

47.5 miles this week.  And I finally made my legs tired.  Really tired.  Like it hurts to walk downstairs tired.

Since I had such an amazing race last weekend doing a 5k...I thought I'd do it again, only twice as long this weekend.  AND the 10k was the same price as the 5k {I know, silly reason}

Kiss Me, I'm a Runner starts in Legacy Village and runs DOWN through a park and UP to Richmond Road ~ crosses the street into Acacia Golf Course.  The 10k winds all around the golf course & a neighborhood.  Then you run back DOWN and UP through the park.

I'm very happy with how I ran.  And despite icy and hilly conditions AND being stopped by the police to let traffic pass on Richmond Road...I was only 30 seconds off a PR.  Kinda pisses about the traffic stop...but what can you do?  Who knows if that breather actually helped me on the final hill.  And we'll never have that answer.

I did have one angry mile...In mile 5 we got back to the golf course & started passing the people walking the 5k.  They have to know they are on a race course...right?  They have to know the people running are racing...right?  They got the whole start and finish line concept, I'm sure.  I was following another 10k runner and we both said, "excuse me" when we ran past the first of the walker group.  We both passed them with plenty of room for all of us, when I hear one of the people say, "Don't you hate rude runners who don't say 'passing on the left'?"
seriously?
It just lit me up.
I yell back, "Passing on the Left.  I'm just tired from running."
oh my
Kinda felt bad, but seriously?  I can hear you.  And I wasn't being rude.  Until you were.

I would love to not be gasping for air at the finish!
But I ran well and had fun ~ so successful race #2 for the season.

So, I ran 8 total miles Saturday ~ and went on an 18 miler today.  Thankful that Kelly joined me for the last 5.  I should have fueled...and she helped me stay strong.  And I found my weekend limit.  It's a 10k & 26 miles.

And the make the weekend even better...I went to the BEACH both days.

Leprechaun Dash 5k

Ran my first 5k of the season today...

5k's have not been my friend lately.  They have been hard and I have been slow.  I won this one at Winter Party ~ so I figured I'd run it.  I had a 16 miler on my schedule & I couldn't figure out the best way to get that in with a race at 11:00am on Sunday.
I opted to run 16 on Saturday and see what Sunday brought.  I really wanted to see what I could do ~ but I didn't want to get hurt either.

I spent 20 minutes stretching really well this morning {got to the point that I could touch my toes!}, ran a 2 mile warm up {this is going to be SOP for 5k's}, and toed the line.  Kept Kelly in my sights for most of the race & just ran fast but comfortable.  I noticed that after mile 1, I was passing people.  Passed the 2 mile marker & knew & could see that the last mile was downhill. {by mile 3 Kelly was pretty far ahead}.  "I can and I am" carried me quite a while.  It just felt good today.  I was very pleased to see the clock still saying 24: when I turned to the finish.  I felt strong and capable and am very happy with my run.  The first time EVER that I have run negative splits in a 5k.

Second in my age group as well! {I could have beat the first place person, but I would have had to PR by 20 seconds}

February Running

Other stuff happened in February that wasn't quite as depressing.

We went curling with Mount Union Alumi
Some of my favorite people went to Mount Union

Valentine's Day happened.
I got Mike a bag of beef jerky and beef sticks because nothing says "I love you"
quite like processed meat.

Whirly Ball with my teacher peeps happened.  Nothing is more fun that Whirly Ball, Bowling and Laser Tag with amazing coworkers.

Beach glass hunting happened.  I forgot how much I love to beach glass hunt.
And the frozen lake is beautiful to witness.

Girton's retirement happened.
We worked to throw the most epic retirement party ever ~ and I think we succeeded.  The evening was made when son, Kyle, surprised her.
Would have been more epic if Kyle was able to start the golf cart & drive around like I wanted him to.  Thank goodness it wouldn't start!

Golf carts may have been a theme this month...because we "ran" across this one on our Saturday morning run.
Keys weren't in this one...so I wasn't tempted to start it.  Funny that it was gone when we ran by it on our way back.

I am very thankful for my running friends who have kept running fun this month.  The boys aren't really running.  Mike's knee hurts & Dodd has been super busy with his house that he will never live in and his new job.  Their long runs have been 6-8.  I'm finding other people to run my 12-15 with.  And, while it's not the same, it's great in it's own way.  I have to drive a little more (and get up a little earlier) but it's good.  I'm learning to be less about my running.

We have also been weigh lifting on Mondays and Wednesday for the past four weeks.  It may sting a little if I punch you.  I've made it to Yoga maybe twice this month ~ but swimming every Friday.  Today I swam a mile in 39 minutes!  I felt like a total rock star.  Had to swim another lap to get to the second ticket for Good Running.

February Totals:
137.34 miles for the month
279.95 miles for the year

251.61 miles in my Gortex Ghosts ~ worn for 6.1 this month!
235.77 miles in my Black Brooks Glycerin 15 ~ my weight lifting shoes now ~ but they saw one run.
314.64 miles in my purple Brooks Glycerin 14
205.85 miles in my HOT PINK Brooks Ghost 10

What hurts?: nothing
Weekly mileage this month:  26.8 ~ 41 ~ 31.6 ~ 32.6  I skipped a long run in there and then ran 26 miles the following weekend.  I'm a little under my plan, but I've taken a rest day each week that was unplanned.  I think I need that rest day.
Favorite place to run this month: A snowy Tuesday morning.  We made fresh tracks in the snow & there were flakes floating down & zero wind.  Absolutely stunning morning.

January Running

The car said -14 on our way to this run in Chardon.
January Running...
Cold
Snowy
Warm
Sunny
As all Northeast Ohio Winters go
It's always changing.

There have been many treadmill miles this month ~ but also some beautiful in the snow runs.  Even some warmer sunny runs.
I decided to add .1 miles to all my runs this year.  Every 10 runs I'll have an extra mile for the year.

Good times with my running peeps.
January has brought NERC track workouts at Spire ~ and I'm learning to not hate them.
Hill Repeats with a fun crew in Geneva.

January also brought Adult Prom (aka NERC Winter Party)  "Middle Aged White Girl Dancing"

This is my favorite picture of us ~ Because THIS IS US.  As Anita commented on the Facebook: "This picture says it all.  Becky gesturing wildly and talking animatedly, Mike grinning like he meant to do whatever he did.  And has no shame."  Yes.  Love.

And then there were the Grand Prix prizes.  I was pretty sure I was second or third in my age group.  Marcella was ahead of me, having only run 8 Grand Prix races, I knew she had me on participation points.  They did men first and both Mike and Dodd placed third in their age groups!  Go Mike!  He was so excited because he had been so far down the list.  Then they called the women...Marcella placed first in our age group followed by two people I didn't even know.  I didn't place.  I was shocked and rather disappointed.  It was the first time I didn't place in the Grand Prix.  Then they called the overall masters...and I placed third there (just behind Barni!)  It doesn't speak very highly of my character, but I was relieved.  And excited.  I won a bottle of wine too :)

This month also brought a fun reunion.  We were at Mount for a swim meet and went for a walk between dive events.  Bailey was going to text us if the next diving round started so when Mike's phone dinged, I asked if it was Bailey.  "No," he said, "It's Brian Matthews."  Brian asked if we were at the swim meet...because he was in the gym watching his daughter on the dance team.  We have not seen Brian in over 10 years.  What a great surprise.  Then this past Tuesday, we went back to Mount to the wrestling alumni night.  It was fun to see some people we knew, and talk to others who knew us.  Mike had a great time and Jacob finally got to meet Coach Monty.

January Totals:
142.61 miles for the month
142.61 miles for the year

245.51 miles in my Gortex Ghosts ~ not worn at all this month.
231.57 miles in my Black Brooks Glycerin 15
266.02 miles in my purple Brooks Glycerin 14
127.42 miles in my HOT PINK Brooks Ghost 10

Training for:  O24 in April

My WEIGHT: 142 ish.  I keep thinking I should do something about this...but I talk myself out of it because I remind myself that I'm upping my miles.  Then I got to DQ.

Some interesting facts:
Longest run this month:   14.25 training run
What hurts?: nothing
Weekly mileage this month:  30.5 ~ 32.9 ~ 30.8 ~ 37.2

the heartbreak of running

Time to own up to my BQ attempt in Columbus.  I didn't do it.
us before the race
While it's really as simple as that...It's been a heck of a learning experience.  Never ever have I attempted something like this athletically.  This was past training for my first half...and training for my first full...and training for my first BQ attempt.  Those I did pretty much on my own.  And while they were hard and time consuming and all consuming...this training cycle took on a whole new level.  I had a coach.  I had a plan.  I was physically ready.  I was mentally not.
around mile 9 when I still felt good

I couldn't even do a September run log...because I was having difficulty controlling all the anxiety I had surrounding Columbus.

When I failed, I felt like a failure.  Like a total cry-baby, I'm-a-loser, nobody-likes-me, pathetic failure.  Deep down I knew how stupid that was, but I was crushed.  bitter disappointment.  Failure.

{Not inserting the most pathetic running picture of all time.  I will show it to you if you ask nicely...but I'm not posting it.}

Dodd met his goal of completing his first Ironman.  And that was something to witness and will be something he will carry as part of him forever.  It was brutal and complete human misery ~ and despite so many things working against him.  He succeeded.
He was still standing 16 1/2 hours later at the finish.

Mike met his goal of completing 3 marathons in 35 days.  He's a Maniac ~ truly.  The marathon is not a distance to be disrespected ~ and he did three of them between September 10 and October 15.
After Erie, Northern Ohio & Columbus
He's a Maniac!

I failed.

That is hard to own.

So I've been listening to Run, Selfie, Repeat podcast ~ Where Kelly has had two failed BQ attempts...and she has put into words exactly the heartbreak I've felt.  And I'm coming to terms with what I attempted and failed and what it will mean to try again.  She states over and over ~ the only failure is the failure to try and I'm trying to own that.
She also talks about doing the thing that scares you the most.  I've really been thinking a lot about that this past week.  I was so scared to fail, yet I've survived.  How many things I've I said no to because they made me anxious {scared} and it was safer to not do them?  Maybe it's time to stop living in 'fear' and start doing the things that scare me.  Like trying to BQ again.

Two weeks after I got my ass kicked in Columbus...I ran the Bridge to Bridge half in Ashtabula.  It was a cool rainy morning, and I was scared.  I was running for fun and for NERC points, but I didn't want to get out there and feel miserable.  I didn't want to hate racing ~and I didn't want to hate running.  And it was all I hoped for.  It was so amazing to be running with no expectations...just me and my feet and the road and the uphills and the downhills and my music...I pulled my sleeve over my watch and ran.  1:49:54.  Nice and easy and fun at an 8:24 pace (the race was actually 13.24 miles...so it was actually a little faster than that)  I was fourth overall female and first in my age group.  That's what my heart needed.  Running is FUN and I'm not so bad at it.
First in age group ~ cool picture award

September Run Log:

428.85 miles in my new pink Brooks Glycerin 13
535.12 miles in my old purple Brooks Glycerin 14 ~ Holy Cow.  Didn't realize I had worn these so much...they don't look that old.
121.93 miles in my Black Brooks Glycerin 15 ~ I don't really like this version of the Glycerin.  My toes hit the end of the shoe...and they are a size 9,5.
23.37 miles in my new purple Brooks Glycerin 14 ~ Columbus shoes

My WEIGHT: I was 136 right after Columbus.  Weighed myself fully clothed for the Maintain Don't Gain challenge at work at 140.  I'm very quickly approaching that weight naked...I CAN'T STOP EATING.  and all I want to eat is JUNK.

Some interesting facts:
Longest run this month:   26.2 ~ The Columbus Full...watch read 26.54.  I will add my race report to the bottom of this run log.  It's sad and pathetic and I meant every word.

I wrote the following Monday, October 16: {You is John Distler ~ as I was writing it for him, as my coach}

My feelings about the 2017 Columbus Marathon {where it wasn’t 32 degrees at the start} 30 hours after the fact…

I am super proud of my training.  You had me doing crazy-ass things like hill repeats at 9,000 feet and progression runs and 10 mile runs at 4:30 in the morning.  I hit almost every single pace you set for me ~ and I was as confident as can be that I could maintain an 8:50/mile pace for 26.2.  I have it in my legs and my lungs ~ maybe not as in my head as could be, but I was pushing out the doubt with positive thoughts.  The first taper week was anxiety ridden.  I was  a MESS.  Felt like I was a middle school girl all over again.  But after tears in Maryland...I put my head on straight and focused on what I could do; sleep, eat & not get sick.  In retrospect, and I don’t know exactly how to say this, it meant too much to me.  I was wound too tight at the start.  The start of Cbus is crazy adrenaline building ~ but I was already there {Bruce was singing to me and I was singing back}

Mile 1 ~ working on slow.  I was doing it too...watch said 8:46, ran up a hill and turned the corner where my watch beeped mile 1 at 8:16...I swear it was a Garmin glitch.  I didn’t see the mile flag for another .19  & my watch was off by .2 for every flag after that. (actually read 26.54 at the finish).  I believe I didn’t screw up mile 1…

Mile 2 -14 ~ finding my groove.  Felt GREAT.  Plan was to take a salt tab every 3 miles or so & I managed that throughout this time.  Took water at each station (except the first one which was on the FAR LEFT ~ 5 lanes over from where I was running ~ only time water wasn’t on both sides)  At mile 11ish (I think) I took my Carb Boom.  It didn’t really sit right in my stomach, but I made myself eat it all over a mile or so.  I knew I was getting warm, so I started dumping water on my neck.  Not a lot, but enough to feel the cool.  I was right on target this whole time.

Mile 15  ~ I knew this started the uphill portion, so I wasn’t too worried that it was a 9:06/mile.  Then the thoughts started coming…”this is where I should start to speed up” “I don’t have it in me to push harder” And my stomach was starting to roll...which doesn’t happen to me.  I probably should have taken more salt, but I was afraid to eat.  I started taking Gatorade and water at the stops and sipping my Tailwind.

Mile 16 ~ still going...but the dark thoughts were strong.  “This sucks.”  “I’m hot.”  “I still have 10 miles” “even when I make it to 18, that’s still 8 miles out” 9:34/mile

Mile 17(10:17/mile) - 18 (14:13/mile) ~ I needed to do something.  I was hot and my stomach was not happy (thinking back, I wonder if I’m using that as an excuse...I am scarred by Cleveland & my ice bath).  I started walking, pulled out my orange and ate half of it.  Walked to the next water stop, took Gatorade & water and kept walking.  “8 miles...I’m not going to finish this…”  ‘I will never run another one of these.”  “Who cares about Boston?”  I broke.  That’s the thing that makes me the saddest.  I broke.  That’s on me. This is when the 4:00 pace group passed me...and I didn’t cry.
Then a guy came up alongside & said, “Walk to the bridge and then get going again.  You know what you need to do.”  Exactly what I needed to hear.  So I rolled my eyes & started running again.

Mile 19 ~ 10:56/mile ~ walking through the waterstop...and a little further ~ almost stopped at the aid station to get some ice, but was a little afraid they would take my temperature first...so I ran past.

Mile 20 ~ 12:08/mile ~ walking more than the waterstop

Mile 21 ~ drank beer ~ was amazing ~ 9:52/mile

Mile 22 ~ I just need to keep going ~ 9:57/mile

Mile 23 ~ I totally suck, but I’m not quitting ~ 10:53/mile

Mile 24 ~ I really suck, but I can do 2 more miles ~ 10:14...helped when I saw Kelly & she ran with me without talking.  I felt so bad that you all came to witness my failure.

Mile 25 ~ This thing will be done 10:32/mile.  Total failure felt when I saw you. Like a little kid, I wanted to make you proud of me. I wanted your first coaching to be a success & bring you more peeps.

Mile 26 ~ 10:37/mile  ~  And, good Lord, .20 is a LONG distance.

Ran the last .54 at 9:08/mile

Totally not what I pictured at the finish, but I’m proud I didn’t throw a temper tantrum...didn’t even want to. I congratulated people around me and commiserated about the weather and watched people getting their temperature taken… waited to cry on Dodd’s ironman jacket & your shoulder and Mike’s shoulder and in the car.
I didn’t have any more in me.  I put it all out there ~ so I wasn’t disappointed in that… Just heartbroken that I set a goal and wasn’t even close to it...and I broke.  That sucks.

What I know:
1. 26.2 is a long distance every single time you do it.  It doesn’t get shorter like the half does.
2. I need to be able to mentally get through 16-19 ~ and the training that may take scares me.
3. I really learned how to “run the mile you’re in” during my training.  I did not apply this to the actual race.
4. The heat/humidity is out of my control.
5. Physically I was ready for this.  I’m not really sore today, no more than I was after the Rock Hall half ~ and nothing hurts like my calf did after that race.
6. Mike told me on the way home that the feelings of disappointment I had were the exact reason he doesn’t set goals and work harder. {He had enough of that during his wrestling career.} There’s some merit in that.  Yesterday I agreed with him, but typing this...I’m not done.  I really deep down want this.  I’m pissed off at myself and know I can do better.

So I’m sad, and I’m mad and I had to smile all day and agree that finishing is an accomplishment...which I know it is...but…
